How we use your information

This notice explains what personal information we collect through this website and our related services, why we collect it, and your rights.

Who we are

This website is run by the Custodians of African Literature Initiative (COAL), a nonprofit registered in Nigeria with the Corporate Affairs Commission. We handle personal information in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

What we collect

  • When you contact us by email, phone or WhatsApp: your name, contact details and what you tell us.
  • When you volunteer or apply for a role: the details you give in the form, such as your name, contact details, skills and experience.
  • When you donate: donations are processed by our donation provider, which collects the details needed to process your gift. We receive your name, contact details and the amount, not your full card details.
  • When you buy from the Bookstore: the details needed to take payment and deliver your order.
  • When you sign up for updates: your email address and name.
  • When you visit the website: anonymous visit statistics, such as which pages are viewed. These do not identify you.

How we use it

We use your information only to respond to you, process applications, donations and orders, keep you updated if you have asked us to, and improve our work. We do not sell your information. We share it only with service providers who help us run these services, or where the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, or as the law requires.

Your rights

You can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, ask us to delete it, or withdraw your consent to updates at any time. Email info@coalng.org with "Privacy" in the subject line.
