International Day of Education 2026: celebrating grassroots education
On the International Day of Education, we celebrated the community educators who keep children learning in Plateau State, alongside our partners.

On 24 January 2026, COAL marked the International Day of Education. Education is a human right and a foundation for peace and development, yet too many children in Nigeria are out of school, and many who are in school are not yet reading or doing basic maths with confidence.
Our Grassroots Accelerated Education Fund (GAEF) backs the community-based organisations and educators who are closing that gap. They focus on literacy and numeracy and help children find their way back into structured learning.
This year we marked the day with a youth-led creative engagement, together with CreoTribe, Claire Aid Foundation and Uplifting Our Children Through Support. We were proud to celebrate two of the educators at the heart of this work in Plateau State: Kangyang Gana of Claire Aid Foundation and Dr Roslyn Yilpet of Uplifting Our Children Through Support.
